Pupils from Pico visiting RV G.O. Sars

MS Loran

On this beautiful day in Horta, the public were invited to visit the vessels RV G.O.Sars and MS Loran. A special invitation had been issued to pupils from the island Pico (Escola Cardeal Costa Nunes in Madalena) who follow MAR-ECO as members of the school network. Under the leadership of their enthusiastic teacher Mr Fernando Luis, they were the first visitors arriving at 9 o'clock in the morning. After a seminar with the PI Odd Aksel Bergstad, they were shown around the ship and informed about facilities and instruments.

By the end of the 'open ship' event at noon, hundreds of locals and tourists had been onboard the two vessels, leaving with posters and the attractive MAR-ECO bookmark (with a cartoon on the long and strange life of a deep-sea fish, the orange roughy). Thanks are due to scientists and staff, not least our Portuguese colleague Filipe Porteiro, for guiding a lot of groups through the RV G.O.Sars, and also to the master and crew on MS Loran for their hospitality.

The afternoon was used to brief the new participants on procedures and regulations onboard, and slowly everyone settled into their labs and work areas.

The intention was to leave Horta at 3 p.m., but departure was postponed due to late arrival of spare parts for ROV Bathysaurus, an essential vehicle for Leg 2 of the cruise.

Weather Conditions

Excellent. At times a little windy.

Tomorrows expected highlights

Hoping to leave Horta to get on with the challenging tasks scheduled for Leg 2 filled everyone with some excitement.
