The EU Network of Excellence in Marine Biodiversity (MARBEF) sponsors a number of “Responsive mode projects” (RMPs), one of which deals with mid-ocean biodiversity. The PIs of the mid-ocean RMP are Annelies Pierrot-Bults and Uwe Piatkowski, MAR-ECO participants from the Netherlands and Germany.
In this first workshop held in the Institute of Marine Research 12-14 October, the theme was strategies and methodologies for assessing the state of the biodiversity in open ocean pelagic sites. Experiences from MAR-ECO cruises formed the background of the discussions, and a report is due in March 2006 where a review and evaluation is presented.
Other participants in the workshop were Filipe Porteiro form Portugal, Tone Falkenhaug, Mikko Heino, Olav Rune Godø, and Odd Aksel Bergstad from Norway.
Further plans for the RMP include workshops to deal with taxonomical issues, and a follow-up meeting discussing and identifying mid-ocean reference sites.
The workshop participants enjoyed a social event hosted by the Bergen Museum, bringing together MAR-ECO students and scientists for informal exchange of news and ideas.
