Exploring biodiversity in new areas [September 02] For the past several hundred years, European explorers have set out to investigate the various ecosystems of oceans around them. Much of the knowledge that we have about life in our oceans today comes from these early intrepid expeditions. However, although the continental shelf waters have been thoroughly investigated over the last century, we still do not know very much about the ecosystems of the deep waters.

Draft for School Network plan drawn up [August 02] Institute of Marine Research (IMR) in collaboration with the University of Bergen (UiB) have been given the role of coordinating the MAR-ECO project. IMR and UiB will also be responsible for developing the public outreach platform that is outlined in this application. |  |

Collaboration with Bergen Museum [April 02] The MAR-ECO Project is an ambitious international project to study and document marine life along the mid-Atlantic Ridge from Iceland to the Azores. Bergen Museum will be responsible for curating the collected samples from the cruises.

Presentation of the public outreach group [March 02] In order to support and publicise the MAR-ECO Project and activities, the Project Steering Group has established a Public Outreach (PO) Steering Group. The PO programme will be responsible for disseminating and popularising information about MAR-ECO activities. |  |
