Quantitative zooplankton observations from Russian manned submersibles

The P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow has 2 twin manned submersibles “Mir-1” and “Mir-2”. The submersibles are operated from the RV Akademik Mstislav Keldysh. For the benefit of MAR-ECO participants and the planning process, a report has been prepared by Dr Alexander Vereshchaka (P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow) on the methodology used for quantitative zooplankton observations from the submersible dives using the Mir-submersibles. As an illustrative example of the results from such investigations, data from dives at 37°N on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge are included.

This report is the fulfilment of a contract signed in March 2002 with Dr Alexander Vereshchaka (, who may be contacted for more details on the Mir.
